Abolition of the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire in Wales

15/03/2018

The Welsh Assembly has recently passed an Act which abolishes the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire for all social housing tenants in Wales.

The date of the abolition is 26 January 2019.

Many of our residents do not have the Right to Buy or Right to Acquire because of the nature of their tenancy (retirement housing) or the age of their property. In some local authority areas (Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Swansea) the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire are already suspended and the end of the suspension is after 26 January 2019.

The Right to Buy or Right to Acquire currently applies to almost 1600 of our residents. We have written to those residents letting them know that if they intend to buy their property they must apply before 26 January 2019. We have also sent those residents a copy of a Welsh Government leaflet called ‘Information about the end of the Right to Buy & Right to Acquire in Wales’ which gives more information.
