Moving check list

Being organised and planning ahead can cut down on the hassle of moving home. Here are some things to consider well before the day itself:

4–8 weeks before your move

  • Confirm the date you’re moving
  • If you’re renting, make sure you give your landlord the required notice period
  • Arrange help with moving. Contact removals companies or van hire companies and ask them how much they might charge you for this service. Ask friends if they can help
  • Arrange time off work for moving
  • Tell service providers like gas and electricity that you will soon be moving
  • De-clutter – take this opportunity to get rid of anything that you don’t need or want
  • Start collecting boxes to pack up things you’re not using every day, for example your winter clothes if it is summer etc
  • Start using up the food stored in your freezer – and don’t be tempted to refill it!

Closer to the move

  • If you have children or pets, arrange for friends or family to look after them during the move
  • Give your bank, employer, doctor etc your new address
  • Arrange with the post office for your post to be forwarded to your new address (you will be charged for this service)
  • Finish your packing – and don’t forget to label your boxes’ bedroom’. ‘living room’ etc  so you know where they go
  • Tell your family and friends your new address
  • Confirm the date of the move with those who are helping
  • Remember to take meter readings when you finally leave your old home
