Gas Safety
We visit all homes with gas pipework or gas appliances at least once a year to check they are safe to use. This page explains what to do in an emergency, how we help keep your homes safe and what your responsibilities are.
Smell gas or suspect a leak?
Call the Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999. Only use your mobile phone if you are outside your home and away from the suspected leak.
If your carbon monoxide detector is beeping or alarming, open all windows and doors and then call us immediately on 0800 052 2526.
- Turn off all your gas appliances. If you can, switch off the gas at the meter
- Open your windows and doors
- Do not use any electrical appliances including your light switches
- Do not smoke, vape, or use naked flames
After calling the Gas Emergency Service, then call us on 0800 052 2526.
Follow the guidance of the emergency services and, if told to stay outside, do not go back in.
Once the leak has been stopped, the Gas Engineer will explain if any further work is needed. Please keep any paperwork provided by the engineer who made the system safe as we will need it for our records.

How we help keep you safe at home
It’s our legal responsibility to carry out a gas check every year to make sure you’re safe in your home. We will also check your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms at the same time.
We will send you a copy of the certificate following this check for your records.
Gas appliances that are not checked might become unsafe and can produce carbon monoxide that can be life threatening.
What do you need to do to stay safe?
We will contact you to make an appointment so that one of our Gas Safe registered engineers can complete a gas safety check before the expiry of your current certificate. It’s vitally important that you keep this appointment. During the appointment, we will also carry out a visual check on gas appliances that you own (like a cooker) and tell you if they need attention.
You will need to make sure that someone over the age of 18 is present to provide access to your home. If the appointment is not suitable, you must contact us to make a new appointment immediately.
If you do not let us in to do this important check, it may mean that we have to take court action to gain entry. This is not a course of action we ever want to take, but it is essential in some cases so that we are able to carry out these important safety checks.
Please help us to keep you, your family, and your neighbours safe by letting us carry out your annual gas safety test.
Contact us if:
- you think you smell gas then follow the advice above immediately
- you think there is a fault with your heating or hot water by filling in the report a repair form
- your carbon monoxide detector is beeping or alarming, open all windows and doors and then call us immediately on 0800 052 2526
