Making a difference

A place where every child has the chance to thrive

For children of asylum seekers and refugees, who have undergone harrowing experiences, witnessed traumatic events and lived through fear during their journey to Wales, having a safe place to play, learn and build friendships is crucial.

Through its regular Play Project sessions in Cardiff, the Welsh Refugee Council (WRC) aims to foster a safe and nurturing environment for those children.

Wales & West Housing was humbled to help the organisation to meet the increased demand for its play sessions by sponsoring its play sessions for a second time.

In the past year the WRC has seen a 40% increase in the number of children using its Play Project. With the help of our sponsorship they were able to support 279 children going through the asylum process.

This summer the Play Project is running extra activities where asylum seekers and refugee children and their families will learn more about their community. Some of those extra activities have included visits to the Museum of Wales to learn about Welsh heritage and adventure days at local parks and wetland areas to learn about nature and the environment.

Athina Summerbell, Business Development Manager at the Welsh Refugee Council, said: “At the Welsh Refugee Council, our Play Project is a beacon of joy for sanctuary seeking children, providing them with moments of laughter, friendship, and hope.

“Thanks to the generous support of Wales & West Housing, we can create these vital spaces where childhood memories are made.

“Together, we’re not just making a difference; we’re shaping a future where every child has the chance to thrive.”
