Real life 100 year old Joyce Brown
An active life, hard work and in more recent years a lot more early nights – just some of the things which Wales & West Housing resident Joyce Brown says have helped her reach the remarkable age of 100.
Resident Joyce celebrated the landmark birthday with 14 of her family members followed by a party with residents at Nant-y-Mor extra care scheme, where she lives in Prestatyn, North Wales.
Joyce keeps herself busy doing puzzles, crosswords and knitting – and still managed a short break away to South Wales over Easter.
“I’ve always enjoyed doing things, I used to do a lot of dancing when I was younger and I travelled a lot,” said Joyce.
“When I moved into Nant-y-Mor in my 80s I was on holiday every six weeks or so. I can’t get out as much now and my knitting is becoming a bit of a struggle. But I’m determined to stay as independent as I can. – I have wonderful support here from the care staff.”
Joyce moved to North Wales when she was 10 years old, where her parents ran a grocery shop and a dairy in Rhos-on-Sea.
She settled in Deganwy, where she lived for 30 years, then Prestatyn before moving to Nant y Mor in 2011 following the death of her husband Robert and stepson, Andrew.
“Over the years I have spent a lot of time on my own so I’m quite happy doing puzzles or reading a book.
“I was an only child and didn’t always have that many people to play with and I think that’s why I have never felt lonely now as I’ve got older.”
Joyce still lives independently in her own apartment at Nant y Mor and has access to care and support when she needs it.
“I’ve been at Nant y Mor since it opened and I think it’s fantastic. I wasn’t so sure about moving here at first, but it has everything I need. It feels secure and they look after me well. I have carers to look after me if I need help to get to dinner, or if I don’t feel well enough to go they bring dinner to my room.”
