New outdoor area for community hub

Visitors to a food hub and pantry in Flintshire have a new outdoor space to catch up over a coffee.

Our contractors, who are building new homes for us in Flintshire, have been helping the community around the development.

Castlemead Group provided new picnic tables at the Sandycroft Hub which is run from the old scout building on Watkin Street, Sandycroft. They also donated food to the centre.

We are working with Castlemead Group to build eight new homes on the site of the former New Inn on Station Road, Sandycroft. The development is set for completion later this year.

Sandycroft Hub and Pantry was set up by local resident Lesley Povey to provide the local community with somewhere to buy food at a low cost, with limited options to shop in the village and scarce public transport options.

Visitors pay £3 for any 15 items from the hub, which receives 160kg of food per week from FairShare plus donations from local supermarkets.

Lesley said: “The hub has grown unbelievably since we first opened in October. We open three times a week and we usually have a queue of people waiting to come in.

“We’re much more than just a food pantry. People come here to meet and socialise. The new tables will make a big difference as an extra space for people to sit and chat outside during the summer.”

Gary Cook, Regional Development Manager for North Wales, said: “I’m delighted that Castlemead have been able to support the work of Sandycroft Hub and Pantry. We aim to support the local community wherever we build new homes, and we hope that Castlemead’s contributions will help the hub continue making a difference to people’s lives in Sandycroft.”

Joe O’Donnell, Director at Castlemead Group, said: “Castlemead Group are delighted that Wales & West Housing have given us the opportunity to support the Sandycroft Hub and Pantry and we hope that our contribution of picnic tables will help with the very worthwhile work they do within the local community.

“We were also thrilled to donate food hampers collected by our staff, all of whom wish the Hub continued success in their good work.”

Sandycroft Hub and Pantry is open Mondays 12pm to 2.30pm; Wednesdays 11am to 1.30pm and Fridays 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Scout Building, Watkin Street, Sandycroft, CH5 2PN.
