Official opening for new extra care scheme in Ceredigion
Residents at Aberystwyth’s new extra care scheme enjoyed a day to remember as it received its official opening.
A performance from Ysgol Llwyn yr Eos school choir and unveiling of a plaque by the town’s MS, the Rt Hon Elin Jones, marked the occasion at Maes y Môr.
The school have already played an important part in the scheme’s short history as they chose the name Maes y Môr, which means field by the sea.
A former pupil of the school also designed the logo for the restaurant, Yr Harbwr, which features the lighthouse seen on Aberystwyth’s seafront.
Speaking at the event, the Rt Hon Elin Jones MS said: “I’d like to congratulate everyone who has been involved in developing the concept of the building and now designing the lives and care of people who have made their homes here. It’s a very special effort by everybody.
“I’ve been really struck by the quality of the facility. It is one with such an amazing view of Aberystwyth and Cardigan Bay. This community has chosen to ensure that this site continues to be available for those who are in need of living well and living long in our communities.
“Maes y Môr is a great place to be and thank you to Wales & West Housing for developing it here in this community in Aberystwyth.“
The scheme has already been recognised for the difference it has made to residents after staff’s work to support residents’ wellbeing was named as the best Supporting Active Living project at this year’s Welsh Housing Awards.
“I’ve been really struck by the quality of the facility. It is one with such an amazing view of Aberystwyth and Cardigan Bay.”

Alex Ashton, Chair of the Board at Wales & West Housing, said: “The 56 apartments here are home to 62 people and I am so pleased that many of our residents joined us to celebrate.
“Every extra care scheme is so important to its residents, as they not only provide them with their own front door and independent living space, but they also offer the comfort and security of on-site care and support when it’s needed.
“It has been a pleasure to speak with so many of them to find out about the positive impact moving here has had on their life.”
Located at Pen yr Angor, Trefechan, with magnificent views over the town and harbour, Maes y Môr is Wales & West Housing’s first extra care scheme in Ceredigion and the second to be opened in the county.
The scheme provides a range of facilities and 24-hour on-site care and support for 62 adults, aged from 22-95.
It was developed in partnership with Ceredigion County Council to provide a new option for independent living in Aberystwyth.
